Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex is looking forward to Christmas in July on Sunday, July 28th from 12 pm – 3 pm. Bring a new, unwrapped toy for the patients at Nemours and Wolfson Children’s Hospital and get half off public skating admission! That is only $6 per person and includes skate rental. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens first brought Magellanic penguins to Tuxedo Coast in 2010. The Zoo welcomed two penguin chicks in June of last year. These penguins are currently classified as a “threatened” species due to oil spills. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens are working hard to save these fuzzy, artic friends. When you attend our Penguins & Pals events, you’re supporting Jacksonville’s favorite penguins.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens opened their doors in 1914 with their first animal, a red deer fawn. In 1924 the zoo moved the animals and relocated to it’s current address. Today, the zoo covers more than 120 acres and has been recognizes as a top 20 zoo across the nation. Today, more than 800,000 people visit the zoo annually and a staff of 250 runs the operation. As a public-private partnership, 600 volunteers assist at the zoo. Support one of Jacksonville’s longest-standing destinations when you attend our Penguin and Pals event on June 15th.

Ice skating can be a scary skill to tackle, especially if you grew up in Florida. While ice skating might seem scary at first, it’s easy to conquer with a little determination, patience and excitement. Jacksonville Ice strives to make it easy for everyone to learn to skate. Here are five tips for ice skating beginners.
Dress for Success
Before you even step on the ice, it’s important to wear a warm outfit. Fitted clothing is your best bet because it allows for freedom of motion. Socks and skating tights are a must to keep your toes warm and to prevent blisters. If possible, wear thin microfiber socks. These socks will be less bulky and less likely to absorb moisture. Skate rentals are available at Jacksonville Ice.
Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously
When you’re learning to skate, you will fall. It’s impossible not to. What’s important is you get back up, and you’re able to laugh about it! Don’t be too hard on yourself when you’re learning. Remember that learning a new skill and improving yourself is fun!
Warm Up Slowly
It takes a lot of hard work to learn how to do a triple axel. No one got on the ice for the first time and won a gold medal. It’s important to start slow when learning to ice skate. Creating a solid foundation for your skating is key to learning harder skills. It’s important to warm up slow and create a base of skills for your future ice-skating career.
Know How to Fall and Always Get Back Up
Even the best skaters fall, what’s important is getting up! Practice falling to one side off the ice a couple of times before trying on the ice. Lower your center of gravity, slide onto one hip and relax down to the ice. To get back up, roll onto your hands and knees, place one foot on the ice between your hands. Keep your knees bent as you put the other foot on the ice and slowly rise to a standing position.
Glide In To Success
Establishing proper control and balance sets up a solid foundation for skating. When skating forward, use a marching action with your toes slightly turned out. Take little steps in the beginning, then slowly transition into a two-foot glide. Slowly practice, pushing harder with each step. Eventually, you’ll build your confidence and speed.
If you’ve caught the ice-skating bug, Jacksonville Ice has the cure. We have Learn To Skate programs for all ages! To enroll call the office at 904-399-3223. We can’t wait to see you on the ice!
