Ice skating can be a scary skill to tackle, especially if you grew up in Florida. While ice skating might seem scary at first, it’s easy to conquer with a little determination, patience and excitement. Jacksonville Ice strives to make it easy for everyone to learn to skate. Here are five tips for ice skating beginners.
Dress for Success
Before you even step on the ice, it’s important to wear a warm outfit. Fitted clothing is your best bet because it allows for freedom of motion. Socks and skating tights are a must to keep your toes warm and to prevent blisters. If possible, wear thin microfiber socks. These socks will be less bulky and less likely to absorb moisture. Skate rentals are available at Jacksonville Ice.
Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously
When you’re learning to skate, you will fall. It’s impossible not to. What’s important is you get back up, and you’re able to laugh about it! Don’t be too hard on yourself when you’re learning. Remember that learning a new skill and improving yourself is fun!
Warm Up Slowly
It takes a lot of hard work to learn how to do a triple axel. No one got on the ice for the first time and won a gold medal. It’s important to start slow when learning to ice skate. Creating a solid foundation for your skating is key to learning harder skills. It’s important to warm up slow and create a base of skills for your future ice-skating career.
Know How to Fall and Always Get Back Up
Even the best skaters fall, what’s important is getting up! Practice falling to one side off the ice a couple of times before trying on the ice. Lower your center of gravity, slide onto one hip and relax down to the ice. To get back up, roll onto your hands and knees, place one foot on the ice between your hands. Keep your knees bent as you put the other foot on the ice and slowly rise to a standing position.
Glide In To Success
Establishing proper control and balance sets up a solid foundation for skating. When skating forward, use a marching action with your toes slightly turned out. Take little steps in the beginning, then slowly transition into a two-foot glide. Slowly practice, pushing harder with each step. Eventually, you’ll build your confidence and speed.

Jacksonville Ice joined ice rinks across the country to celebrate Hockey Week Across America from February 17-24. The week-long celebration was created by USA Hockey to engage the hockey community in celebrating hockey at all levels and exposing the sport to new audiences.
As Northeast Florida’s only ice rink to offer year-round skating opportunities, it is always hockey season at Jacksonville Ice! During Hockey Week Across America, we watched Floridians lace up a pair of skates and head out onto the ice and spectate from the stands.
During the week we had giveaways, discounts and events centered around hockey and our communities love for the sport.
On February 23rd, we hosted a free Try Hockey clinic. This event was designed to provide kids, between the ages of 4 to 9, a completely free experience to try youth hockey. Brian Ferlin, a former Boston Bruins NHL player who used to play at Jax Ice as a child, made an appearance! We appreciate everyone who came out to the event and to the coaches and volunteers who made the event possible! We had a great week and can’t wait for next year!

Finding ways to get your kids off the couch is a constant struggle for parents. When you’re living in Florida, ice skating is not the first activity you think of. Parents are often worried about injuries and their children’s lack of skill. But, have no fear! Ice skating is an exciting and safe form of exercise that is perfect for all ages! Here are 5 reasons to get your kids on the ice at Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex.
Ice Skating Facilitates Focus
During skating lessons, your child will learn how to focus on a single task at a time. They will be taught how to fall correctly and focus on their coach’s instructions. Any figure skater will tell you getting on the ice is a form of meditation for them. Great focus is required to become a successful skater. Your child will learn how to focus and concentrate and have fun while doing it.
Rain or Shine, the Skating Rink is Open
Is the Florida heat getting to you? Do you need a place to escape the rain? Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex is cool and calm no matter what the weather looks like outside. You never have to worry about your skating lesson getting rained out or packing extra ice to beat the heat, we have plenty. We will be here, rain or shine.
Skating Creates Confidence
When a child puts effort and concentration into a skill, the smallest wins can create confidence. During every lesson, your kid will feel excited and proud of the skills they have mastered. Even if they’re proud for staying on their feet, they’re building confidence every time they step on the ice. The longer they skate, the prouder they will become of themselves and the work they’ve put into the sport.
Skaters Are Always Taught to Get Up When They Fall
A tough lesson for kids to learn is the idea of never giving up. It’s easy for them to quit after the first fall during a skating lesson. They’ll soon realize how important it is to get back up. The more they fall the more they’ll see that the fall isn’t what matters. What matters is what you do after the fall.
Making Friends is Easy
By taking skating lessons, your child will learn a new skill with other kids their own age. These kids will learn together, fall together and help each other get back up. If your child falls in love with the sport, they’ll be around their new friends for years to come. Ice skating is a great way to get your child to step out of their comfort zone and learn a new skill with new people. The parents become friends as well, meeting up for lessons every week.
Skating provides more than physical activity. It shows your kids how to work towards a goal, build confidence and make new friends! Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex is the perfect place to learn to skate. We can’t wait to see you!
